FATHER JERRY POKORSKY | MARCH 16, 2023 | 10:35AM EDT

We need butchers. Butchers provide us with meat for chicken dinners and beef for steak sandwiches. We are butchers – after a fashion -- when we carve Thanksgiving turkeys or cut-up pork for stir fry.

The butchery of animals is necessary but unpleasant. The job isn’t for everyone. We’re grateful that some have responded to such vocational training. A good deal of butchering has become automated. Nonetheless, managing blood flow in industrial meat-packing plants is also a necessary -- if unpleasant -- business.

The purpose of cutting the flesh of animals determines whether one is a butcher. A butcher who kills animals for food is a good professional. A butcher who kills an animal for sadistic purposes is evil.

A butcher is not a surgeon, and a surgeon is not a butcher, although slicing techniques can be similar. The purpose of a surgeon is to heal, fix a deformity, excise cancer, and so on. Most of us would consider surgery an unpleasant business nonetheless. We’re thankful for a surgeon’s competence and the drugs that dull our pain. A surgeon exercising his craft to heal is a good surgeon. A surgeon who uses his skill to deform is wicked.

The so-called doctors who experimented on Jews in concentration camps were monstrous butchers. On this, we can all agree. Recoiling from U.S. Grant’s aggressive Civil War attacks (especially the ill-fated Cold Harbor assault) earned him the “butcher” label among the Confederates – and perhaps even his men. Referring to killing in the war in Ukraine as “butchery” is not far off the mark.

It is perplexing to realize that most of our population fails to distinguish between a surgeon and a butcher. It is breathtaking to realize that many parents and school systems around the United States have become butchers.

The mutilation of children in blood worship of the LGBTQ ideology has become common practice. At long last, emerging as a political point of contention, such liturgical butchery is now a standard part of many government school programs.

It is even more shocking to read that the president of the United States – a self-professed Catholic -- has elevated the butchering of young people as a moral imperative:

“President Joe Biden lamented Florida’s ‘cruel’ treatment of transgender young people in an interview with The Daily Show as Governor Ron DeSantis and Republican state lawmakers advance a series of policies targeting gender-affirming care for trans-Americans in the state.

‘What’s going on in Florida, is, as my mother would say, close to sinful. It’s terrible what they’re doing,’ the president said during an interview with The Daily Show’s Kal Penn. ‘It’s not like a kid wakes up one morning and says, “You know, I’ve decided I want to become a man” or “I want to become a woman” … I mean, what are they thinking about here? They’re human beings. They love, they have feelings, they have inclinations,’ he added. ‘It just, to me, is, I don’t know. It’s cruel.’”

Perhaps the shock is misplaced, similar to Captain Renault's fake surprise in Casablanca: “I'm shocked! Shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”

Liberals have supported the butchery of abortion for over 50 years. If butchering unborn babies is a yawner, it is even more acceptable to butcher the genitals of children after birth.

These non-butchers behaving like butchers give the profession a bad name. Perhaps the butcher industry association (there probably is one) should protest.

President Biden besmirches the reputation of honest butchers -- and Catholics. And his mother.
